The Order of Christian Initiation for Children is a two-year process of formation for children from eight years old (the age of reason) to 12 years old who have not been baptized and would like to enter into the Church.
Non-baptized children age 7 or older seeking the sacraments of Baptism, First Communion, and Fist Reconciliation are prepared through the process of Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) Adapted for children/teens.
Your child will need to be enrolled in our Children's Catechesis program. Please visit our Children's Catechesis page and select this class for your child: "Order of Christian Initiation for Children (English)."
Your child will need to be enrolled in our Youth Ministry program (Middle School or High School). Please visit the Children's Catechesis page for registration and let us know which sacraments your child is seeking. Also, please visit the Youth Sacraments page for more information on OCIA Adapted for Teens.
Children under the age of 7 do not need to go through OCIA for Children but may be baptized in the Church after the parents take a Baptismal Preparation Class at the parish. Please register for the Baptismal Preparation Class on the parish website: www.sfatx.org/baptism
The process of formation is a two-year process. The child will most likely be baptized into the Church at the Easter Vigil in the 2nd year of the formation.
Because your child has special sacramental needs AND most likely is receiving catechesis for the first time, the OCIA for Children classes will help them to build a foundational understanding of the Church, her teachings, her sacraments, and Liturgy. While other children will take additional sacramental preparation sessions alongside their ongoing catechesis, a child in OCIA for Children will have all their sacramental preparation taught in the OCIA for Children class.
If between the ages of 8 and 12 and need baptism, your child will also prepare for and receive Reconciliation and Eucharist when they receive Baptism. They will then continue in their ongoing formation and participate in Confirmation preparation with their peers when they are chronologically and spiritually ready to do so.
OCIA for Children is offered on Tuesdays from 4:00-5:30. Please let us know if this time is not feasible for you and your family.
It is preferred that families with multiple members of different ages go through the formation and enter the Church together. This is usually a one-year process. Please get in touch with Jackie Bedore, Director of Catechesis and Evangelization, for more information on this process.
